Discrimination & Segregation: Does it still exist?
I'm taking an Intercultural Counseling course this semester and it makes me think A LOT about discrimination, racism, segregation, and the like. So, my question to all of you is, do you think all of this still exists in the world today? Do you see it when you walk down the street or is it a thing of the past? To extend on this debate, have you personally every been discriminated against or treated differently because of who you are?

I just thought it'd be interesting to see your thoughts on the subject.

RE: Discrimination & Segregation: Does it still exist?
It does still exist but people brush it under the carpet and pretend that it doesn't. Sexism is still quite a big thing with women earning 10-20% less in the same job as a man, even if they're more qualified/better at their job. People seem to think that sexism is no longer a big deal but it is. I'm still convinced that some of the members in our society have issues with it being run by a woman, especially with it being a male-dominated society.

Racism is also quite a big thing from my home town as there are a lot of Asians that live around there and some of the older generation don't like it, and their views end up being passed on to their kids and so on. It's not as bad as it used to be because it's something that they can't escape and they're slowly growing used to it. Some of my friends' parents are quite racist though and won't even let them consider dating someone who isn't white, which I think is pretty harsh.

RE: Discrimination & Segregation: Does it still exist?
All types of discrimination are still prominent. Racism. Sexism. It's all there. Even Ageism. There's a program over here called The Ugly Side of Beauty which looks at the lives of people obsessed with their looks in comparison to people with facial disfigurements. You will NEVER see someone with a disfigurement on TV or in a modelling commercial...etc. I don't know what you call that though -- lookism?

In terms of segregation. Back in the 1950s when the caribbeans came over to help out with the war, when they decided to stay, they shoved all the ethnic minorities in skyscrapers -- which we now call council estates. They kept them in certain areas and kept them away from the more surbuban areas and that still exists to day. You got a minority requiring council property -- stick 'em inside an estate. I mean, I see that they're trying to renovate certain areas. There's an area called Brixton over here that was relatively poor, but now they've put a Starbucks and a H&M there -- trying to make it look a bit more up market. I see more of a mixed crowd now -- lots of far eastern asians too. So I wonder if they just repromoting segregation by kicking all the previous individuals out and replacing them with new ones....

There's another form of discrimination with our government which bugs me which they try and keep hush hush, and it's that they give priority housing to illegal immigrants over their own country's residents. I know that the immigrants are trying to escape war, famine, and all that other stuff, but we should still be looking after our own country first. If you can't look after yourself, you shouldn't be allowed to look after others either.

A government-run state was what we fought a revolution to prevent, was it not? Now look at America, dominated by the politicians. Power-hungry shysters that look after number-one.

Yes, discrimination does exist in modern-day society, and it's quite prominent. You just don't see it as much because it's hidden, people pretend that it isn't there, and so on. Sexism, racial discrimination, blah.

Another form of discrimination I haven't seen mentioned is difference. I do not know a technical term for it (or maybe I do; I might just not remember it), but I see it all the time. The ridgid stereotype one must follow in school to be considered cool or even receive communication from some other children. Children these days are cruel little bastards that bully and belittle others. Obviously, this isn't everyone, but if you put someone that's different in the picture, someone odd, eccentric, mentally different, you can bet that person will be the target. In my book, that's discrimination, also. And oh is it ever prominent.

(Pardon my language; the first language I learned as a child was the language of sailors, haha.)

The big wide world isn't so nice to outsiders unless they're Lady GaGa either. I can see where you're coming from there. Schoolchildren are far worse for that one though. I speak from experience.

RE: Discrimination & Segregation: Does it still exist?
So, today, I was looking for the episode I had missed of one of the shows I watch. I clicked a link thinking it went to some of the show extras, which it did, but I scrolled down and was reading some of the comments that were left and I came across this:

Quote:black people suck go back in the cotton feilds ass holez

Are people really still that closed minded? I fully understand that racism still exists in this world--especially being half black--but honestly, I don't understand why sometimes people just can't keep it to themselves. The world is changing, get over it. It's really frustrating.
